Vinyl Banner Buying Guide: 13oz vs 18oz Blockout vs Mesh vs Fabric
Most banners come down to four materials: 13oz scrim vinyl for everyday outdoor use, 18oz blockout for double-sided signs, mesh for fences and windy spans, and fabric for premium indoor displays. Pick by where the banner lives and how it's lit — here's the short version.
Quick comparison
| Material | Best for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 13oz scrim vinyl | Outdoor events, storefronts, the everyday workhorse | Durable, economical, takes grommets and hems well |
| 18oz blockout | Double-sided banners, hanging signs | An opaque core stops the back side bleeding through |
| Mesh | Fences, building wraps, windy spots | Perforations let wind pass so it won't sail or tear |
| 9oz fabric | Indoor displays, photo backdrops, premium booths | Soft, matte finish with no glare under lights |
How to choose
- Outdoors, single-sided? 13oz vinyl is the default — strong, weather-ready, and the most cost-effective per square foot.
- Need it readable from both sides? Use 18oz blockout so the reverse image doesn't ghost through.
- Mounting on a fence or anywhere windy? Mesh sheds wind; solid vinyl in the same spot becomes a sail.
- Indoor and lit? Fabric photographs cleanly and avoids the hot-spot glare you get off glossy vinyl.
Finishing matters too
Hemmed edges and grommets are standard for hang-and-go banners; pole pockets suit boulevard and street banners; and a retractable stand turns a banner into a portable display. Tell us how you're hanging it and we'll spec the finishing.
